Description of Class

** Break on 2nd April** A course using inks, painting, mark-making, and collage which incorporates art therapy, group- work and positive psychology. This course aims to support individuals in exploring creativity using a variety of materials and art practices. We create a non- judgemental space together to allow for play and experimenting. Participants are free to express themselves without the need to produce either a finished product or make " good art." The course is open to all regardless of previous experience in art making. Each session begins with a short verbal check- in with each other, and a recap on the work made the previous week. We then embark on two guided art activities. The session ends with a group sharing....( without an obligation to speak, if chosen.) "The art work we make together often surprises. It comes about through our letting go of preconceived ideas, standards or expectations about a finished product. We work together quietly in a supportive space which engenders discovery, spontaneity and fun. All you need to bring is a willingness to experiment." What follows on from the process of exploring with materials such as inks, paints, & pastels, in a guided, non judgemental way - happens without effort, usually reveals more of our own potential & creativity and can lead to a positive impact on well-being and a lessening of stress." tutor, Michael Gale. Your tutor Michael Gale trained in Art Psychotherapy at Goldsmiths, University of London in 1996, gaining experience within adult mental health and drug & alcohol dependency settings, and then as a qualified Registered Art Therapist, within special education and mainstream schools offering 1-1 and group Art Therapy. He studied Fine Art and continues to make paintings and collages as well as facilitating experimental art workshops for adults. Testimonials '10/10: I really enjoyed the experimental nature of the course. Each week we explored something new. For me, this course has allowed me to enjoy art again; to have fun with it - something I've not allowed myself in years.' Nicole Mendelson, Lewes, April 2024 "Michael is a welcoming, encouraging and supportive teacher who created a relaxed and permissive space in which it was very easy to engage in a series of structured exercises. I enjoyed all of it, particularly using techniques that aim to bypass normal ways of drawing and making art. Thoroughly recommended!" Mick, Brighton, June 2022
