Watercolour Course

Location: Upstairs at Clarkes, Bond Street, Brighton

There will be a one week break on Wednesday 16th February.

  • Build your confidence and skill set quickly and easily in this great course. 

  • Learn different techniques, practice core skills and create beautiful watercolour paintings.
  • A small and supportive class, you will be guided through each step in the capable hands of Peter, our tutor. 

What does the course cover?

Peter will demonstrate the diversity of watercolour from wet-on-wet techniques to layering of vibrant colours.  Core painting skills will also be covered such as tone, colour and contrast.  The course will be interspersed with landscape, figure and still life classes with reference to modern masters including Constable, Turner, Piper, Matisse and Picasso and many more.  This course is suitable for all abilities including beginners.

About the tutor

Peter Harrap studied at Camberwell College of Art (1993) and Winchester School of Art (1994-1997).  Peter has a strong working knowledge of teaching and currently teaches a foundation course in Art & Design at Kings in Brighton.
Peter has also curated exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts and most recently ‘Constable and Brighton’ at Brighton Museum (2017). Peter studied Life Drawing under John Lessore (2000-2003) and established a School of Drawing and Painting at Leighton House Museum. Peter is currently Artist in Residence to the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, UCL. His paintings are exhibited internationally.

Please bring the following equipment with you:

Note: A 10% discount is available at Clarkes Stationers in Bond Street if you show them your course booking acknowledgement.

  • Basic Watercolour Set including cadmium red, blue (preferably ultramarine or prussian), cadmium yellow, sepia (this will be extra to the set), white, violet, lemon yellow.
  • Optional colours – alizarin crimson and cerulean blue
  • 5 Brushes ranging from 1” Flat brush to very fine rounded
  • Masking fluid
  • Water Pot (glass jam jar?)
  • Plain White palette (saucer, plate or tile?)
  • Kitchen Roll (plain white)
  • Paper (Instead of paying a lot of money for watercolour paper buy a large sheet of Somerset Paper (thick textured printing paper) or equivalent, which can then be cut up). Cartridge paper is available at 20p/sheet, Plain Newsprint at 5p/sheet.
  • Several objects or images, which you are interested in painting or simply your imagination if you wish!

Please do not buy top quality paints or brushes, as it is not necessary at this stage.
