Online Weaving Workshop Series

Tutor: Jackie Bennett

Location: Online via Zoom, taught in a small group of 5

Next dates: to be confirmed.  Please email if you are interesed.

Three workshops that will build up your weaving techniques step-by-step and result in a piece of weaving that you will be able to display on a wall. Suitable for complete beginners and those who would like to revise weaving basics. This will provide you with a foundation to weave your own art tapestry pieces or move on to another type of weaving.

Session 1

We will learn to put a warp on our frames, knot the base and start learning tapestry weaving, with a wide range of colours of wool yarns. Learn to combine the yarns and weave blocks of colour. A simple fringe can also be added if desired.

Session 2

Learn to build up angles in your weaving, and weave outlining techniques, including soumak and other textural effects.

Session 3

Learn to weave curves, as a basis for a landscape or even to create a circle in your design. Build on your colour blending and textural weaving techniques to complete your finished piece. You will learn how to finish off your weaving and cut it from the loom.

Information: Notes on warping-up and the techniques learnt will be provided. At each session, you will revise warping-up and Jackie will demonstrate the techniques and provide guidance and feedback. You will work at your own pace. There will be the option to weave at home between sessions if you wish. Suitable for complete beginners and those with some weaving experience.

About the tutor

Jackie teaches weaving as an art form, exhibits and undertakes commissions internationally. She has been weaving for over 20 years and teaching for 12 years. Jackie started weaving on small frames whilst on an Art and Design Foundation Course. She then studied African and Asian Art and Archaeology at SOAS, London University. She completed a Post-graduate Diploma in Tapestry Weaving, at West Dean College in 1997 and continues to work in weave, sometimes including embroidery and felt-making. She is a member of the British Tapestry Group, which promotes contemporary tapestry weaving in the UK, and the East Sussex Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers.

“Tapestry weaving is definitely a slow art. It is also very rewarding as the process of weaving has a calming effect, using colour and texture in a direct, hands-on and creative way. Through my workshops I like to encourage individual expression and help the personality of each weaver to come through”
