Portrait Painting in Oils

What does the course cover?

This course covers the basic principles of traditional portrait painting in oils, including colour mixing.  

There will be two set projects inspired by masterpieces from the 17th to 19th centuries.

Suitable for all abilities.

About the tutor

Juliet has an M.F.A in Fine Arts (Auckland University) and a PhD on the relationship between music and painting (University of Brighton). She works as a professional portrait painter and continues to develop her abstract painting. She has many years’ experience in teaching oil painting, printmaking, life drawing and portraiture.

You will need the following tubes of oil painting colours

Raw umber

Burnt sienna

Yellow ochre

Blue black or Paynes gray

White  (titanium or zinc) (medium to large tube)


Two A3 (NO BIGGER) sized canvas boards

A disposable palette or artists palette


Palette knife

Brushes - At least

1 small round brush for detailed work

1 medium sized flat or filbert style brush

1 large flat or filbert style brush


Two jars with lids. One small (pesto size), One larger jam size jar.

Low odour oil painting thinner and brush cleaner (e.g. Zest it).

Liquin (optional)

Cotton rags

Old clothes e.g. apron or old shirt

Masking tape

Pencil, Biro (preferably red) Ruler

These materials should be available at Clarkes in Bond Street.
