Myths & Fairy Tales

Tutor: Wendy Ann Greenhalgh

From Carol Ann Duffy’s World’s Wife poems to Angela Carter’s dark gothic stories, there’s a long tradition of writers using myths or fairy tales as inspiration for their work. These ancient stories are filled with resonant metaphors and archetypes providing rich material for the imagination. During this course, we’ll look at examples from the Minotaur (pictured) to Pandora, Cinderella to The Red Shoes, and Grimm and Andersen to Duffy and Carter. Then we’ll do our own retelling in poetry and prose, casting new characters in the lead roles and changing settings to reflect on our contemporary lives.

Testimonials

I wanted to say how much I had enjoyed this course, I feel it will help me with getting inside characters both on a writing and performance basis using the themes we explored such as transformation or gods and goddesses. I don't have a background in mythology and found the course a great introduction which I feel I can apply in many ways, Wendy got us writing with surprising ease. Aine
