Kalari Chikitsa / Chavutti Thirymal
Adam Phillips
The Healing art of Kalari is thought to be up to 5000 years old, originating in Kerala, South India.
It consists of a series of Full body massage sequences, which follow the nadi (energy lines) and lines myofascial continuity, (where one muscle passes strain onto another).
These myofascial lines have been treated for 1000’s of years in Kalari - and in recent years increasingly in western physiotherapy clinics.
Treatment of the whole myofascial line and not just part of it, will reduce strain throughout the Neuro-musculoskeletal system, not just in the symptomatic area, balancing all aspects of health Holisticallly.
There are other additional treatments to reduce inflammation, stiffness and pain:
Initial Assessment will involve use of Kalari and western techniques.
Then one or more of the following treatments will be indicated.
1. Full body Nadi Massage
This massage corrects imbalance in the Neuro-musculoskeletal system
and improves flow of Prana through the Nadi's ( energy channels) .
It consists of a series of long massage strokes and manipulations,
principally to lengthen shortened or contracted muscles and harmonise
the muscular forces on the skeleton.
Ideally 6 or more sessions are administered to reduce symptoms,
though one off treatments can also be of benefit to symptom management.
Cost: £40
folllow-up: £35
2. Local Massage for acute symptoms
Here, elements of the Nadi Massage can be used in isolation to treat
specific problems in the body. eg. Neck or Lower back pain.
Cost: £25
Follow Up: £20
3. Dhara
This literally involves a 'pouring of oil' and is most commonly known
in the west through pictures of 'Sivo Dhara', where oil is
poured onto the forehead. In kalari however this is done for any joint
where there is pain, or for soothing strained muscles.
The liquid is poured onto the point on the body where there is pain,
calming the body's response and stimulating the nerves to regenerate.
Cost: £35
Follow Up: £30
4. Marmani
This is used to reduce inflammation during the acute stage of Injury. It
involves spreading a paste made of tree bark and egg white onto the
point of injury eg. A muscle strain or tendon sprain.
It works to cool the body and at the same time introduce medicinal herbs to the
bloodstream.
Together these two things reduce inflammation of the injury and speed
up the healing process.
Cost: £25
Follow Up: £20
