Creative Crewel Embroidery

Tutor: Jackie Bennett
Location: Evolution Arts, 2 Sillwood Terrace, Brighton BN1 2LR
Next date: Saturday Workshop, 27 January 2018

Learn hand-embroidery techniques that date back to the time of the Bayeux Tapestry. Using simple stitches, you will embroider an outline of a figure based on the Bayeux tapestry or, if you wish, you may create your own simple outline design. Your design can then be filled with ’Bayeux stitch’.

We will be stitching on linen fabric and using hand-held embroidery hoops. A range of colours in crewel wool yarn will be available to choose from. Please bring your own small scissors and glasses for close-up work, if you need them. Also bring images for a design if you wish to create your own.

Hoops and additional yarns may be purchased from the tutor (optional).

About the tutor

Jackie Bennett has been teaching embroidery workshops using the Bayeux Tapestry as inspiration for over 5 years. She was a founder member of the Battle of Lewes Tapestry group that planned and stitched a large community embroidery to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Lewes in 2014. She has also designed and worked on a community embroidered hanging based on medieval techniques.
