Butoh Dance Workshop

Tutor: Yael Karavan
Location: Evolution Arts, 2 Sillwood Terrace, Brighton BN1 2LR
Next date: weekend workshop Saturday 09 & Sunday 10 September 2017

What does this workshop cover?

Butoh (dance of transformation) is an avant-garde dance philosophy/method created in Japan at the end of the 1950s. These sessions will explore the main elements of Butoh including metamorphoses, dance through imagery, presence, awareness and the tension between opposites. The aim is to free the body from its mundane preconceived set of gestures in order to access a deeper and more authentic essence of movement and archetypal expression. Yael is sharing nearly 20 years of Butoh Dance experience working with Japanese Butoh masters in Japan and Europe.

Open to actors, performers, dancers, artists and/or any-one interested in this creative process.

Suitable for complete beginners and those with experience in dance, movement, somatic disciplines or performing arts.

"My dance is far removed from conventions and techniques, it is the unveiling of the inner life." Tatsumi Hijikata (founder of Butoh)

'"Again and again we are reborn. It is not enough simply to be born of the mother's womb. Many births are necessary. Be reborn always and everywhere. Again and again." Tatsumi Hijikata
