Acrylic Painting

Tutor: Amy Alderson and Dinah Kelly
Working with acrylics is one of the most versatile methods of painting and this course should help students of all levels to develop their colour, composition and experimental skills in this exciting medium. Acrylic paint is water based and can be used thinly like watercolour or thickly like oils. Colours can be glazed, one on top of the other, without disturbing the layers beneath. Probably the main advantage over oils is its fast drying time, which enables the painter to make rapid changes and complete a work relatively quickly. This can be especially useful when working outside.

If possible, please bring the following items to the first week of the course. A 15% discount is available at Clarkes Stationers, Bond Street, who sell a good range of artist’s materials – just tell them you are doing a course with Evolution and take a booking acknowledgement.
PAINTS - Basic Palette: • Cadmium Red • Crimson • Cadmium Yellow • White • Ultramarine Blue
You may use a starter box such as DALER’S Acrylic paints. Any other make is fine apart from REEVES (which is very poor quality).
BRUSHES The following measurements are approximate:
• Daler-Rowney system 3, series SY85, size 2, Round
• Daler-Rowney system 3, series SY21, size 3/4, Long Flat
• Daler-Rowney system 3, series SY67, Filburt
If these brushes are hard to get hold of, then just a small, medium and a larger brush will suffice, or you may like to get an acrylic brush set such as the System 3 acrylic brush collection.
Synthetic as opposed to natural (e.g. sable or hog) is cheaper and often just as good.
Keep any old brushes that you may have as can be useful for different textures
PAPER Paper is supplied at 10p per sheet.
Other useful extra items:
• Rag or tissues
• Mixing palette, plastic or old plate or pad of palette paper (greaseproof).
• Masking tape.
• Plastic bag for taking wet palette home.
• Scruffy clothes, old shirt or boiler suit for painting in.
